Legend has it that the famous feudal-era warlord Uesugi Kenshin stayed here overnight on his way to conquer the Kanto Region in 1560. He named this place Sarugakyo (Town of Monkeys) after dreaming of good portends on a date that fell on the day, month, and year of the monkey. Kenshin Uesugi's Zodiac sign was also the monkey. The 100% natural hot spring water flows directly from the source, and has properties of being clear to the eye and gentle on the skin. The baths and sinks in the guest rooms also draw water directly from the hot spring. The water is drinkable.
